Fulham paid the price for being wasteful in an opening-day defeat at Manchester United and last weekend's draw against West Ham. So the manner in which they saw off Newcastle was understandably a source of pride for boss Marco Silva.

Smith-Rowe scored Fulham’s second goal, a driving, dancing burst into the area and a smart toe poked finish that Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope should have saved – in trying to scoop the ball clear he managed to simply help it into the net. He also hit the crossbar with a rasping long-range strike.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe described his side's first half at Fulham as "difficult" after suffering their first defeat of the season.
